Emerald class have very creative this half term, we have been looking at Aboriginal art and how it tells a story for the Aboriginal people. The children looked at Aboriginal symbols and created their own rock using salt dough. In Science, we have been looking at the seasons and hot and cold countries. We've combined our English and Science together by talking about climate change and how it is affecting our planet. The children have researched hot and cold countries and how the climate and weather is affecting animals and their habitats. In English, the children have created their own fact file to explain more about it and raise awareness. We have worked in unity and collected bottles to make rain gauges and have been monitoring the amount of rainfall using measurement. The children have recorded how many centimetres of rainfall we have had over the past week. It's been a lot! In maths, we have been successful in our new unit of multiplication and division and the children have recalled facts of equal groups and how to show equal groups in addition and multiplication number sentences. I am so impressed with how the children in Emerald class have persevered when faced with challenges and showed empathy to one another, to help each other be successful.

We have shown amazing creativity this week within our writing. We have been learning all about the story 'The owl who was afraid of the dark.' We explored darkness by building our own dens and came up with some amazing vocabulary when describing darkness. We had a mixed feeling about the dark, but most said that it was fun and exciting after building the dens. We then wrote a letter to Plop to encourage him by showing empathy in our writing and giving words of advice and suggestions as to how to overcome his fear. In Geography, we have been learning all about the world, continents and oceans. We were able to recall the four countries in the United Kingdom and spot where we were on the world atlas. We have been comparing different countries climate and explaining why certain countries are hotter than others. In Computing, we have been making a title page for our information piece about minibeasts. We learnt how to collect data in a tally asking their friends and other classes, 'what is your favourite minibeast?' This data will then be added to our digital journal and we will research facts all about these minibeasts. In maths, we have been great independent learners by using the base 10 to add and subtract ones using our knowledge of place value and have been recalling number bonds to add and subtract tens and ones.

We have had amazing opportunities this half term. We had our first sharing assembly and were very good at presenting what we have been learning. We have also had lots of practise of our 'Noisy Nativity.' We have been learning our lines and singing the songs beautifully. We have been learning all about famous London landmarks and can name and identify them. We have been reading the story 'Katie in London.' We love that the lion in Trafalgar square comes alive and are looking forward to writing our own narratives of the story. In maths, we have been learning all about place value, how many tens and ones are in a number. We have looked at how to partition that number using a part-whole model. We have used the base ten to flexibly partition the number showing different ways. We found the easiest way was to partition using tens and ones. We also enjoyed Sam’s food waste workshop. We discussed where food should be stored and some of the children dressed up and have been taking responsibility for how we can manage ourselves so that we don't waste food, with the children suggesting storing any unwanted food in a container in the fridge. Some also said to cut off bruised parts of the fruit and still eat the good bits.

Before the half term, we invited our parents and carers into school to see our Great Fire of London. We had made some fantastic home learning project houses, which were made from straw, cardboard and wood. This was a replica of the houses that were in London at the time of the Great fire. We shared our home learning projects in celebration assembly before we set fire to them. We were amazed by how the fire spread so easily and the afternoon was very much enjoyed by all! We have also been enjoying the story of 'The Naughty bus' by Jan and Jerry Oke and have been creative in acting out our own versions of the story and writing speech bubbles to explain what happened in our story. In maths, we carried out some practical maths activities in pairs to investigate finding part of a number.

Our class have really enjoyed learning all about 'The Great Fire of London' and have created diary entries from Samuel Pepys explaining the events leading up to and around the time of the fire in 1666. We have also created some art work, linking to our art unit on stencils and created a silhouette of the buildings of the fire in London. In Maths, the year 1 children have showed independent learning with the use of part-whole models and how number sentences work. They can show that the whole number is the equals and the 2 parts are the numbers we add together to get the whole. The year 2 children have been looking at bonds to 10, 20 and even 100 and using related facts to answer number sentences. They have linked that if 4 + 6 = 10, 14 + 6 = 20 that must mean that 40 + 60 =100. We have have enjoyed the story 'The enormous turnip' in English and have been looking at the setting of a vegetable garden and using our 5 senses to describe the garden. We even went to the school vegetable patch to bring our writing to life. We used some great adjectives to describe what they could see, hear, feel and smell.

Our class have made such a fantastic start and we have already wowed our new teacher Ms Fisk. We have launched straight in to fantastic learning, using both the classroom and the outdoor area to develop our reading, writing and maths. We have already produced some fantastic poems and instructional writing and are working hard to form sentences correctly with capital letters and full stops whilst also adding in exciting adjectives. We have also produced beautiful calligrams ready to use for printing. Ms Fisk is so very proud of all of us. An excellent start to the term.
